France Services: the free admin help point nobody tells you about
France has moved almost all its admin online — in French, behind logins, and with no counter to walk up to. France Services is the answer: a real person, in a building near you, who will sit down and help you actually get it done. It's free, there are 2,800 of them, and most British arrivals have never heard of it.
The short version
- What it is: a national network of about 2,800 free walk-in help points (France Services), set up so there's one within roughly 20 minutes of nearly everyone — especially in rural France and smaller towns.
- What it's for: a trained person sits with you and helps you do the online admin our other guides describe — accounts, forms, letters, the lot.
- Twelve services under one roof: tax, health, family benefits, pensions, jobs, the post office, vehicle & licence papers, legal information, home-energy help and more — one desk, not twelve.
- It's completely free. No charge, no membership, no catch.
- It works: officially, four out of five queries are fully resolved on the first visit.
- Find yours: the map at france-services.gouv.fr, searchable by town or postcode.
Here is the thing no one warns you about the French system: it is excellent, and it is almost entirely online. The tax return, registering for healthcare, the carte grise for your car, a housing-benefit claim — all of it now happens through websites, in French, behind a FranceConnect login, and assuming you already know the vocabulary. When it goes wrong, there is often no phone number that helps and no counter to walk up to. For a British family that has just arrived, that is exactly where things stall.
France Services exists to fix precisely that. It is a physical office — often inside the mairie, a post office, or a dedicated building — staffed by trained agents whose whole job is to sit with you and help you get through the online admin of the big national bodies. It is not a call centre and not a website. It is a person, across a desk, on your side.
What it actually is
France Services was launched in 2020 as a deliberate answer to public services closing local branches and moving everything online, which left a lot of people — rural, older, or simply not comfortable online — stranded. Each France Services point is a one-stop shop staffed by at least two trained agents, and there are now around 2,800 of them across the country, mapped so that most people have one within about twenty minutes of home. Using it costs nothing.
Why this matters for you
Every other Pimpernel guide ends with the same quiet problem: fine, but I still have to do it, online, in French. France Services is the place a real French person helps you actually push that button — create the account, complete the form, understand the letter, and point you to the right office when it's genuinely complicated. It is the most useful resource in France that almost no British arrival knows exists.
The twelve services, under one roof
A single France Services point is the front door to twelve national bodies.
You don't need to know which body owns your problem — that's their job. Tap any of the twelve to see what it covers, and the Pimpernel guide that goes with it:

What they can't do
France Services is first-line help, and it's important to be honest about the ceiling. The agents will help you understand, apply and submit — but they don't give regulated legal, tax or immigration advice, they don't represent you before the administration, and they won't make decisions for you. For the genuinely legal or fiscal calls — a knotty inheritance, a contested tax position, a complex residency case — you still need a notaire, avocat or expert-comptable (and that's exactly where our own human help comes in). Think of France Services as the place that gets the ordinary 80% done, and flags the other 20% honestly.
How to actually use one
It's refreshingly low-tech:
- Find your nearest on the map at france-services.gouv.fr (search by town or postcode). Your mairie will usually know where it is too.
- Check the hours and whether they prefer an appointment — many take walk-ins, some run on rendez-vous.
- Take your paperwork: passport and titre de séjour, proof of address, your carte Vitale if you have one, any letters you're stuck on, and the logins for any accounts you've already started.
- Go in and explain what's stuck. You don't need perfect French — the agents spend all day helping people who are struggling, and they're patient with it.
Not sure which bit of admin you're even stuck on?
Our Library breaks down each of these — healthcare, the tax return, the carte grise, CAF — in plain English first, so you walk into France Services already knowing what you're asking for.

None of this replaces knowing what you're trying to do — which is what the rest of Pimpernel is for. But once you know the what, France Services is often the fastest route to the done. Most Brits spend their first year not knowing it's there. Now you're not one of them.
